Is it ok to experience some pain when exercising during injury rehabilitation?
In many instances, the answer is yes.
If the overall goal is to decrease pain over the long term and achieve structural support around a joint or body part that is sore or hurt, then exercising with pain can be perfectly safe and is often recommended.
However, it’s very important to note that if you are exercising with pain, you should only do so under the guidance of a qualified health professional like a physiotherapist. There are also a few restrictions that need to be followed, which your physio can guide you through.

Exercising with Pain: Our 3-stage Injury Rehabilitation Process
Exercising with some pain during injury rehabilitation is usually necessary to move forward and improve your ability to cope with everyday tasks.
Here at Inline Physio, we generally follow a three-stage process during injury rehabilitation.
- Establishing a starting point:
When you’re ready to begin rehabilitation, we firstly work with you to find an exercise or a few activities that you can do with a relatively low level of pain e.g. pain ranging from 0-3 out of 10.
Typically, these low-level pain exercises are aimed at developing some muscle strength, control and power around that joint or injury site, and some coordination.
- Embracing the process:
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and just like it took time and persistence to create the historic city, the same applies to injury or illness rehabilitation.
Your ability and function aren’t going to go from 0 to 100 in a week, or even two weeks. In some cases, rehabilitation can be very lengthy. You will have to be patient and trust your health professionals with the process.
- Managing expectations
Along the way there are going to be a couple of steps forward, but there’s always going to be a step back here or there.
When you visit one of our trusted physiotherapists at Inline Physio, they will manage your expectations, and try to ensure that any setbacks that you do experience are just setbacks and nothing more. It’s our aim to always keep moving towards a complete resolution of your symptoms and issues.
