Are you Hypermobile? It’s important to find out which is why we regularly screen for hypermobility and ligamentous laxity in our clinic.
While many doctors believe that connective tissue disorders are rare, more recent research is showing that it is more likely being underdiagnosed. If you’re a little bendy then why is it important to know if you are hypermobile?
While the diagnostic criteria for different hypermobility disorders are evolving you can do a quick check with a Beighton’s Scale, we explain how that works i our previous article here.
Other more recent tools include the “Lower Limb Assessment Score” and “Upper Limb Hypermobility Assessment Tool”
1. Most present with pain
The prevalence of generalized hypermobility is thought to be as high as 10-20% in the adult population and approximately 35% in children. Other research has found that almost 40% of people attending Rheumatology Clinics for pain are hypermobile.
People who are hypermobile are presenting to practitioners not knowing that they are hypermobile with pain, either from an injury or without a known mechanism.
2. Longer Recovery Times after Injury
While most therapists can rehabilitate most injuries, sometime hypermobile joints do not respond the same way as stiffer joints may. It may take you longer to recover due to longer healing times of the soft tissue, the need to build more strength than normal to help support the mobile joints and higher need to build proprioceptive and motor control exercising into your program.
3. Feeling Worse After Exercise
Have you ever done exercise with your friends? Afterward, they are all raving about how good they felt but you feel tired or worse, dizzy and nauseous? This is your body telling you that your body does not respond the same as the typical body. This does not mean that yours is faulty, it just means that you need to find the right exercises that will work for your body.
If this sounds like you then you need to look for someone who will look at you as a whole and apply a different approach to your exercises. You need to be working on proprioception, motor control. Here at Inline Physio we will teach you how to protect your hypermobile joints, gradually increase your strength around the joints and help you move towards the things you want to be able to do.
3. Other Unexplained Symptoms
Being hypermobile can open the door for other issues to creep in. Being a Connective tissue disorder, and with most tissues having collagen components, it can involve multiple systems including the heart, nervous system, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and immune systems. Hypermobility can lead to wide and varied symptoms including fatigue, poor tissue healing, sensitisation of the nervous system, pain and other health issues.
To some these miss matched symptoms make you a difficult patient, here at Inline Physio we can show you how your symptoms fit together and how to manage them long term.
Delaying Diagnosis could lead to worse outcomes
Recent research has shown that for those late diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome may be a predictor of worse outcomes than those that were diagnosed earlier and started treatments such as Pilates or other forms of strengthening exercises.
